[Back one generation]

George James Phillips was born at 7 Hargreave Square, Bermondsey, Surrey on 19 March 1871, the son of William Henry PHILLIPS and Jane nee DICKINSON. George was 8 years old when his father died in 1879, and in 1881 George was a boarder at a small school at 35 London Rd, Twickenham, Middlesex. By 1891 he was working as a letter sorter, living with his mother Jane and teenage sisters Kate and Esther, at Vine Street Buildings in the parish of St John Horselydown.

George married Amelia DAVIS at Holborn, Middlesex on 12 Sept 1896. In 1901 the family lived at 55 Duncan Buildings, and in 1905 at 17 Denys Buildings, (part of the Bourne Estate), close to Portpool Lane and Leather Lane. They lived close to the Church of St. Alban the Martyr in Holborn, and would almost certainly have been among the congregation of Father Arthur Henry Stanton, (1839-1913), a prominant and sometimes controversial character who preached at St Alban's for many years.
