A Builder and Gentleman of Stourbridge 1769-1842

[Back one generation]

George Scott was baptised 17 Dec 1769 at Oldswinford, Stourbridge, Worcestershire, son of George and Sarah SCOTT. He married Ann BENNETT at Oldswinford on 17 Nov 1787. (Ann Bennett was baptised 29 Nov 1767 at Oldswinford, daughter of Richard and Ann Bennett). George is listed in Pigot's Directory 1828 as a bricklayer of High Street, Stourbridge.

Children of George and Ann Scott:

George Scott was a bricklayer builder and later a property owner; by 1841 he was a county elector, living at Heath Road and of independent means.

Widowed and re-married

George's wife Ann Scott was buried 22 Sep 1834 aged 67, at Oldswinford. That same year, at the age of 65 or thereabouts, George was married again, to Mary PARKER, at Birmingham St George on 7 Dec 1834. Mary was baptised in 1803 at Kinver, so she appears to have been nearly 35 years younger than George.

George Scott died 4 Dec 1842 aged 73, of "apoplexy". His occupation was given as Gentleman.

In George Scott's Will he described several properties in Stourbridge, many of which he built himself. A total of 56 messuages (dwelling houses) are listed, including:

Heath Road 1837
Location of George Scott's terrace of houses in 1837

Houses were not numbered in those days, but referred to by the names of their occupants. Beneficiaries of George Scott's Will were his surviving second wife, Mary Scott; his children Charles, John, Richard, Benjamin, James, Francis, Ann, Susannah, Mary Ann and Sarah; his grand-daughter Elizabeth JONES and his sister Sarah HADEN. He also left a pew in St Mary's church Old Swinford, to his son James Scott.

He was buried in the churchyard of St Mary's Oldswinford. A survey of the churchyard in 1930 identified a "double vault and railings" bearing his name. Today the railings are missing, but the holes for these are visible in the rectangular stone base. The chest tomb survives, but this appears to have been repaired and the inscription to George Scott is gone. An end panel is dedicated to the wife of Charles Scott who died Oct 12 1857 aged 58, and to Charles Scott who died 27 Dec 1869 aged 76. I believe these to be George's son Charles and his family.

George's Widow Mary re-marries

George's widow Mary Scott was married secondly to Edwin HOLLAND, a silver plater, on 24 Sep 1844 at Birmingham St Thomas, by licence. Edwin was the son of Henry HOLLAND, also a silver plater. This time the age difference was in the opposite direction, as Mary was about 18 years older than her new husband. A pre-marriage Indenture of settlement was made on 19 Sep 1844 between Mary, her husband-to-be Edwin Holland and her father Joseph Parker, enabling her to dispose of four properties at Catherwell Field independently of her husband. In 1851, Edwin was an inn-keeper with Mary at Spon Lane, West Bromwich.
In 1861 Mary Holland was back at Stourbridge, living at on of her own properties in Union Terrace, and she appeared to be living alone there. Mary died 7 Dec 1863 at Stourbridge, and probate was granted 9 Jan 1864. Mary left her wealth to her sisters and their families, excluding her husband Edwin from any inheritance. So, what became of Edwin Holland? By 1861 he seems to have parted from his wife Mary, to live in London. He served as a workhouse supervisor at the London City Union Workhouse, Bromley (Bow). On 4th May 1870, Edwin Holland married a second time, to Jane PUTTOCK from Sussex. They had at least one child (Edwin Thomas HOLLAND, born about 1872). In the 1871 and 1881 censuses, Edwin was a dairyman in Camberwell and Billingsgate.
