Wine cellarman of Holborn

HOME PAGE

Alfred Benjamin DAVIS, a cellarman and wine seller in the late 19th century, was born 29 Nov 1846 at 14 Rose & Crown Court, Bishopsgate, City of London. He was baptised 14 Mar 1847 at St Botolph Bishopsgate, City of London, the son of Robert DAVIS and Mary Ann Davis (formerly Mary Ann KIRK). In 1861 he was living with his parents at 4 Bedford Court, near New North Street in the parish of St George The Martyr, Holborn.

Alfred was married firstly to Amelia HOLLOWAY, 19 Apr 1867 at St Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe Church, City of London.

Daughter of Alfred and Amelia Davis:

In April 1871 the family was living at 23 Wells Street, Cavendish Square, Marylebone. On 14 Apr 1876, Alfred, a coffee house keeper, was widowed when his wife Amelia died aged just 29 years old from pneumonia and tuberculosis (TB), at 27 Great Quebec Street, (now part of Upper Montagu Street), Marylebone.

He was married secondly to Susan SCOTT 20 Mar 1877 at St Marylebone. [This Scott family is unrelated to the Scott male line detailed elsewhere on these pages]. Susan was a book-folder, and step-daughter Amelia Davis also worked in book-binding as a fore-lady at James Burn printers at Kirby Street, Holborn. Alfred and Susan lived at Millman Street, Finsbury, (1881 census), close to Susan's parents (James and Susan Scott).

Children of Alfred and Susan Davis:

Later, Alfred and Susan Davis lived at 118 Bell Court, Holborn (1891 census), then at 33 Cold Bath Buildings, Clerkenwell (1901 census). Alfred is thought to have worked in a wine shop close to Farringdon Road.
