Sarah Ann Sargeant
Sarah Ann Sargeant (formerly Carter, nee Osborne)

Sarah Ann OSBORNE was born in the village of Nayland, Suffolk on 14 July 1842, daughter of Edward OSBORNE and Hannah formerly CARTER. She was married firstly to Henry CARTER, a fruiterer from nearby Assington.

Henry Carter died aged 35 on 24 May 1872 and was buried 28 May at Nayland.

Amos SARGEANT, bapt. 28 March 1830, a farm labourer from Great Waldingfield, Suffolk, married Maria CARTER from Assington in early 1854. Maria was possibly related to Henry CARTER; see notes below.

Maria Sargeant was buried 5 April 1872 at Little Horkesley, aged 44.

Widower marries widow

Amos SARGEANT, then a widower in his mid 40s, married Sarah Ann CARTER, a widow aged 31, at Nayland on 29 May 1874. Amos and Sarah Ann had at least eight more children at Nayland:

The 1881 census describes Amos Sargeant as an agricultural labourer, and Sarah Ann as a fruiterer. The 1891 census lists Sarah Ann as a "fruiterer and pork butcher". By the 1901 census, they were both "General Dealers" at their shop in Bear Street, Nayland. By all accounts Sarah Ann was a strong character in the village.

(2) Boxford Petty Sessions 16th July 1880 - A brush with the Education Act

article 3

An entry in the Nayland School Log Book dated 23 July 1880, recorded that "On Friday last Mrs Carter (Sargeant) was fined by the Magistrates for not sending her son Frank to school". The 1876 Education Act penalised parents from keeping their children from school on penalty of a fine of up to five shillings. According to this law, children under 10 were not allowed to work and those aged 10 to 14 had to attend school at least part time. The previous Education Act of 1870 had provided for elementary education for ages 7-11, but attendance only became compulsory in 1880. Frank's 11th birthday was on 29 July 1880. However, every able bodied pair of hands would have been needed on the farms as harvest time approached. No doubt there would have been much lively discussion around the table at that time.

article 2

Amos Sargeant was buried 30 May 1908, "aged 81", at Little Horkesley.

Sarah Ann kept a family Bible which exists today, kept by a family member in Nayland, recording within it many family events. She died 26 June 1931, aged 88. Probate was granted 20 Aug 1931 at London to her sons Frank Henry Carter (of Stoke by Nayland) and Edward Sargeant (of Hadleigh Heath), farmers; effects £127-3s-9d. Her WILL, dated 23 March 1929, divided her effects equally between her children Frank, Edward, Harry, Rose, Nellie, Florence and Elsie.

The CARTER family

Both Henry CARTER and Maria CARTER came from Assington, Suffolk. Parish registers indicate that they may have been brother and sister, children of Henry and Mary CARTER of Leavenheath and Assington. (However, the 1851 census implies Maria was Henry's aunt; they were living in the household of Isaac Carter following the deaths in 1848 of both parents). Further work is needed to sort out the several Carter families in the Nayland, Assington, Leavenheath and Honey Tye area in the 1840s.
Edward OSBORNE (above) also married a Carter. Hannah Carter was baptised 6 July 1820 at Nayland, daughter of Joseph and Sarah Carter. I do not yet know of a link with the Assington Carters.
